Iowa went on a 12-0 run to lead Michigan State 12-2 in the
first minutes of the game. The Spartans later went on a 12-2 run to cut the
lead to a one-point deficit, 15-14. Michigan State tied the game three times in
the final minute of the first quarter. Jenna Allen scored a layup with 33
seconds left to tie the game 33-33 at the end of the quarter.
Iowa took the 43-37
lead at halftime. Megan Gustafson had an amazing game in the first half as she
passed former Iowa standout Ally Distorhoft on the program’s all-time scoring
list.
Michigan State took its first lead of the game on a
three-point shot drained by Nia Clouden in the 8:02 mark of the third quarter,
45-43. Iowa’s Alexis Sevillian later scored a three-point shot to give the
Hawkeyes a 46-45 lead. Allen sunk a layup with 6:56 left in the quarter to
bring the Spartans back in the lead, 47-46. From there, Michigan State began to pull away from Iowa with a 60-53 lead
at the end of the third quarter.
The Spartans held the lead for the final 10 minutes to
obtain their first BIG 10 win of the season against the Hawkeyes.
Clouden led the team with a career-high 27 points. Allen had
20 points and a career-high 17 rebounds making it her fourth double-double of
the season. Mardrekia Cook also finished in double-digits with 14 points.
Michigan State is now 1-0 to start BIG 10 play and 11-1 overall on the season.
Iowa falls to 0-1 to start BIG 10 play and 9-3 overall on
the season. On the bright side, Gustafson had a huge night as she not only
passed Distorhoft but also former Iowa
men’s basketball star Roy Marble in scoring for both men’s and women’s
basketball. The senior is now on top of the program’s scoring list with 2,124
career points. Gustafson also added 14 rebounds to record her 11th double-double
of the season. Kathleen Doyle also made a huge contribution to the Hawkeyes as
she finished the game with 10 points.
