100 Yards with B.J. Farrow

Flames wide receiver B.J. Farrow (6-1, 190) is no stranger to Liberty or Lynchburg. As a graduate of Liberty Christian Academy and a soon-to-be graduate of Liberty University, he is trying to make the most of his final moments of his Liberty football career He has achieved several milestones in his Flames career, including being named a Big South second-team all-conference performer in 2017. He recorded 571 yards and tied for the team lead with 10 touchdown receptions that season is off to another solid start in 2018.

Before the Homecoming Weekend festivities got underway, Farrow took the opportunity to talk with Flames Illustrated and reflected on his journey of how he got to where he is today.

1. What is one of the memorable highlights of your career and why?
I would have to say go back to the Coastal (Carolina)game my redshirt freshmen year, scoring the game-winning a touchdown. That was just a big moment for me, a big memory for me, just to help my team get the win against Coastal.

2. How has Coach Gill motivated you as a player?
He pushes me every day to be the best I can and tells me what I need to work on to be all-around player and just helps me be a leader in the room. I’m a senior now, so I have to be a leader in the room.

3. What do you think is the ultimate goal of the team this season and why?
It’s just to show teams that we play this year that we can compete with anybody. We are FBS now, so it is just a matter of time to show everybody that we can play with anybody. We are not an FCS team anymore. We’re FBS, so we can compete with anybody.

4. You are in the top three on the team in statistics for wide receiver. How is your style of play different from the others? Are there different strategies that you contribute to it?
I just say whenever there is a play that needs to be made, I can make the play. I’m just a reliable guy.

5. You are a business administration major, what do you hope to do with it after graduation?
I’m not really sure, but I want to own my own sports complex one day. I have grown up playing in sports complexes, basketball and stuff like that. So it’s just something I want to do when I’m done.

6. You are a native of Lynchburg, what made you decide to stay home and play for the Flames?
Actually, Liberty was my only offer coming out of high school. My academics weren’t that good in high school, so a lot of schools turned me down, turned me away. But Liberty gave me a chance, and
it was only right to stick with them and come here. Ever since, it’s has been a blessing.

7. When did you start playing football and what made you decide to stick with it?
I started playing football when I was six years old for a Little League team here in Lynchburg. My dad used to coach for this team. I love football just like I love basketball. I kept sticking with it, and I just knew I had to play two sports. One sport wouldn’t get me to where I wanted to be. Football was the one that got me to here now, so that’s why I stuck with it.

8. Liberty is now in the FBS. Have you always dreamt of playing at that level?
Oh yeah. Out of high school, a lot of schools that were recruiting me were FBS schools. I always thought I’d go to an FBS school. But now that we’re FBS, it’s a big blessing just to show teams now what they passed on and being able to play against FBS teams now and just showing everybody what I’ve got.

9. What advice do you hope to pass on to the young generation when you finish your football career?
To enjoy every moment because it’s going to go fast. I’ve been here for five years, and it’s been quick. It’s been a blink of an eye. Just enjoy your time, make memories with everybody on the team and just have fun with it.

10. What made you decide to come to Liberty?
It was my only offer, and all my family is here. So it would be easy on them just to come here and watch me play. I’ve been playing in Williams Stadium ever since high school. It’s just easy for my family to come watch me.

100 Yards with Antonio Gandy-Golden

The Peach State native Antonio Gandy-Golden (6-4, 220) has been a driving force for the Flames. Last year, he reached a huge milestone when he became the seventh 1,000 yard receiver in Liberty Football program history. He would have been ranked ninth nationally if Liberty was qualified to have player’s records in national statistics.

Now in his junior season, Gandy-Golden continues to dominate on the field. Just recently, he recorded a career-high 245 receiving yards versus New Mexico. Now with the next home game versus Troy around the corner, Flames Illustrated took the opportunity to talk with the wide receiver about his impact since coming to Lynchburg.
   1.      What has been your favorite moment so far this season?
Favorite moment so far, definitely last game just seeing everybody just come together. You know, just play their hearts out and just do whatever they could to win. We knew we had to win and just seeing everybody ecstatic on the sideline just happy. And just wanting to win was definitely a great experience.

2.      How did you get your start in football?
How did I get my start in football, well my friend Malok started playing football when we were younger. And I always wanted to play but I never could, so I got to high school I really just jumped into it. Coaches took a liking to me and they convinced me to stay and I just kind of fell in love with it.

3.      You recently had your career-best game against New Mexico. Are there any other goals you want to accomplish this season?
As far as myself wise just really help out the team I mean there is gonna be games where not everything is not going to be possible that happened last game. So just to help us win anyway I really can. I just want us to win games honestly.

4.      What do you think has been the toughest thing that you have dealt with in your football career?
Toughest thing. Just injuries that I’ve had before. Just trying to battle back from those and just keep in my head about football. Because injuries in football is almost impossible because they just happen on top of each other. So just, injuries is getting healthy.

5.      What are your plans after you finish your time at Liberty? Do you have any desire to play in the NFL?
The NFL is definitely a dream, it would definitely be nice. But definitely if not in the end, I’ll be all I’m studying graphic design right now so hopefully I can do something with that because I’ve really been enjoying it so far.

6.      What are your thoughts on Liberty’s transition into the FBS?
Transition has been great so far. It’s been fun, you know we got a great experience both winning and losing. We enjoy it a lot. We just want to keep working hard and just approve to people that we can make it to the next level.

7.      Is there anybody on the team you like being around on and off the field and why?
One of my best buddies on the team is Mitchell Lewis. We’re just both are really goofy we just seem to get each other really well. We just have a lot of fun, we’re both simple people we don’t really too much. We just like to hang around each other and just tell funny jokes or things like that. I also like Buckshot (Calvert) too. We don’t hangout too much off the field but on the field we definitely are goofballs, we got each other.

8.      When not playing football, what do you like doing during your spare time?
I know this might sound lazy! But I like to sleep, I like to watch movies, I like TV shows. I like puzzles too.

9.      What drives you to work hard every day and why?
I just want to be great, I just want to do great things for the school. I like being here a lot. People here talk to me a lot. My mom is also a big driving factor for me. I have two little brothers as well. I’m pretty sure I’ll be one of the first people in my family to actually graduate college.

10.  What do you like about the position you play?
For receiver. It’s just fun, we get to run all over, we get to go hit people and sneak up on them. We get
to catch the ball and score touchdowns and we just get to help people out. It’s just fun.

11.  Now that you are majoring in graphic design, have you had any thoughts about what other things you want to pursue academic wise?
Not really!

Any plans with graphic design if you decide to graduate with that major?
I want to move to Chicago. My uncle is a graphic designer up there. So I would love to go work with him.

12.  What made you decide to come to Liberty?
Definitely the coaches and the people here, the atmosphere. I loved that it was a Christian university. My high school coaches back at home just were great Christian men. These coaches just reminded me of them so much. And it is just I knew this was going to be a place where I could grow. Become a better man, eventually a better father, husband, and just a better person.

No. 19 Liberty Field Hockey Set to Take on No. 5 UConn

The Liberty field hockey team is getting ready for one of the biggest tests this season as they travel to Storrs, Conn. to take on conference rival UConn.

This game is going to be the battle of the undefeateds in the BIG EAST. Both No. 19 Liberty (10-4, 5-0 BIG EAST) and No. 5 UConn (12-3, 5-0 BIG EAST) have had a perfect 5-0 record since BIG EAST play started. But on Thursday one team’s dominant run will end as both teams will meet at 6 p.m. at George J. Sherman Family Sports Complex on UConn’s campus.

The Lady Flames are coming off a 2-1 victory against Georgetown last Friday to advance to a 5-0 record in the BIG EAST. This is the first time that they have done it in the history of Liberty Field Hockey. They will be facing their toughest challenge yet in conference as they look to battle it out against another undefeated team in UConn. The Huskies are in the mindset of defending their national championship. However, they had a difficult slate this past Sunday as they lost a close game to No. 1 North Carolina. In the last three games in BIG EAST play, they beat Temple, Providence, and Villanova all in shutouts.
