Liberty Field Hockey prepares for upcoming contests against Georgetown and Syracuse


Liberty Field Hockey is preparing for a huge weekend as they are getting ready to take on Georgetown (9-4, 2-2 BIG EAST) and Syracuse (8-4, 1-3 ACC).
On Friday, the No. 19 Lady Flames are hoping to stay undefeated in BIG EAST play against the
Hoyas on their home field. Game will tipoff at 4 p.m. at the Liberty Field Hockey Field.
On Sunday, the Lady Flames will travel to Durham, N.C. to take on the No. 9 Orange at Duke’s Jack
Katz Stadium. Game time is at 1 p.m.

 If Liberty beats Georgetown, they will be 5-0 for the first time in the history of Liberty Field Hockey. Liberty will also be playing a top-10 team for the fourth this season as they look to come out with the upset-mind versus Syracuse.
In 2017, Georgetown finished in last place in the BIG EAST with a 0-7 record. This year they have improved to a 9-4 record overall along with a 2-2 record in the BIG EAST. On Sept. 28, they picked up a BIG EAST 2-1 overtime win against the 16th ranked Old Dominion Monarchs. They were on a three game winning streak until they lost to No. 11 Rutgers on Oct. 7.

Syracuse has moved up to the Top 10 after two wins a week ago. They upset ACC rival Boston College in overtime with a score of 2-1. Boston College ranked eighth in the country at that time. The
Orange also won their home game 4-2 against California.

Series History
Liberty has had five matches against Georgetown and has won all of them. The series also includes a 2-0 in BIG EAST play. In 2017, Liberty beat Georgetown in Washington D.C. with 3-0 score. The three goals were scored by Mallory Fortenbaugh, Agueda Moroni, and Victoria O’Keeffe.
The last time Liberty and Syracuse met was at a tournament at Hofstra in 2016. At the time, the Orange were coming off a national championship and were currently ranked second in the country. The Lady Flames had strong start until the less than three minute mark when the Orange forced an overtime that eventually helped them win the game 3-2.

Lady Flames News and Notes

  • Liberty is currently No. 5 in goals per game, assists per game, and scoring average. They also rank fourth in the country in points per game.
  • Senior Agueda Maroni is ranked No. 1 in the country in goals (20) and points per game (3.85). She is also ranked No. 2 in goals per game (1.54) and No. 4 in assists per game (0.77).
  • Junior Mallory Fortenbaugh recently won her second consecutive BIG EAST Weekly Honor roll. This past week, she added a game-winning, one assist, three points and a defensive save to her stats.
  • In the NCAA Field Hockey RPI Rankings, Liberty is currently ranked No. 23. While Georgetown is No. 42 and Syracuse is No. 6.
  • Liberty’s record is 3-3 against top 25 teams this season. Syracuse will be the seventh team they will face.
  • Sophomore Jill Bolton is the second player on the team to achieve 10 goals after she scored one in the Lady Flame’s loss to No. 1 North Carolina.
  • Freshmen Alivia Klopp is having an amazing first year as she leads all freshmen players in goals (5), points (11), shots (18), and shots on goal (14).
  • If the Lady Flames beat Georgetown on Friday. They will be 5-0 in the BIG EAST. The last two years they finished conference play with a 5-2 record.
  • Both Liberty and Georgetown is currently ranked No. 14 in winning percentage. While Syracuse is ranked No. 17 in that category.
  • Syracuse is ranked No. 17 in goals against average.

  • Liberty beat Georgetown 2-1 to move to 5-0 in BIG EAST play.
  • Lady Flames also earned a spot in the 2018 BIG EAST Tournament.
  • Liberty outscored Georgetown 18-4 led by Agueda Moroni who led with with seven shots.
  • Moniek van Aarle scored second game-winning goal of her career.
  • Jill Bolton recorded second assist of the season after a pass to van Aarle for the point in the first half.
  • The match against Syracuse was cancelled due to the Orange's traveling conflict. Makeup date will soon be announced.
