NCAA WBB Week 4 Postgames

UConn Wins Big in Collier’s Homecoming at Saint Louis

ST. LOUIS- No. 1 UConn picked up a 98-42 victory at Saint Louis on Tuesday night. The night was an important
one for Napheesa Collier, as she was playing in front of her home crowd. The senior is from O’Fallon, Mo., which is 40 minutes away from Saint Louis. The day before the game, Collier had her high school jersey retired at Incarnate Word Academy.

UConn had a small setback due to Megan Walker being out sick. However, it did not stop the Huskies from dominating the game. Collier began the game in front of her friends and family by scoring a layup on an assist by teammate Katie Lou Samuelson to give UConn a 2-0 start. Saint Louis’s Ciaja Harbison tied the game at 2-2 with a jumper. The Huskies went on a 13-0 run that began at the 8:39 mark to take their largest lead in the quarter, 15-2. By the end of the first quarter, five players scored for UConn to take a 15-point lead over Saint Louis, 25-10 (Samuelson (8), Christyn Williams (7), Collier (6), Crystal Dangerfield (2), Olivia Nelson-Ododa (2)).

UConn (8-0) defeated Saint Louis 98-42 for its eighth straight win to start the 2018-19 campaign. Collier led the Huskies with 22 points and 11 rebounds in front of her home crowd. Other double-figure scorers included Samuelson (20), Dangerfield (18), Williams (17) and Nelson-Ododa (12). Samuelson made an impact in the game behind the arc, sinking five 3-pointers total in the game. Kyla Irwin, who started in place of Walker, scored two points and collected 10 rebounds.

Saint Louis drops to 4-5 on the season, and the loss snaps a three-game winning streak. The Billikens were led by Myia Clark, who scored 18 points. She also tied for the team lead with four rebounds along with teammates Ciaja Harbison, Brooke Flowers and Evan Zars. Harbison also finished in double figures with 12 points.

UConn Cruises Past Seton Hall to End 2018 Home Game Schedule

HARTFORD, Conn.- No. 1 UConn took down Seton Hall 99-61 on Saturday at the XL Center. The Huskies dominated the Pirates with 35 points in the first quarter to lead 35-13. All five starters, including Olivia Nelson-Ododa coming off the bench, scored points (Christyn Williams (15), Katie Lou Samuelson (10),
Napheesa Collier (5), Kyla Irwin (3), Crystal Dangerfield (1), Olivia Nelson-Ododa (1)).  UConn also had more than 20 points in the second and fourth quarter (second quarter: 26, fourth quarter: 24).

The Huskies improve to 9-0 overall on the season. UConn was without Megan Walker, who is recovering from an illness. Irwin, who replaced her in the starting lineups, increased her numbers as a starter with six points. Samuelson led the squad with 26 points and scored 12 of them behind the arc. The senior also snagged 16 rebounds, with 13 of them on the defensive end. Collier had 18 points, and Dangerfield had 16 points. Christyn Williams chipped in with with 15 points, and Nelson-Ododa had 13 points.

Seton Hall falls to 7-2 overall on the season. Nicole Jimenez led the way with 23 points. She also scored 15 of them from behind the arc. Danielle Robinson joined Jimenez in doubles figures with 10 points. Shadeen Samuels led in the rebounding category with a total of 12 boards.

  •  Nicole Jimenez finished in double figures for the fifth time this season.
  •  This is also the third game Jimenez has scored 20 or more points in a game in her career.
  •  Danielle Robinson had a career-high 10 points.
  • Shadeen Samuels finished in double figures in the rebounding category. This is the fifth game of the season the junior has accomplished this task.

Up Next
  • UConn will conclude 2018 with two away games. The Huskies will play at Oklahoma on December 19 at 8:30 p.m. and at California on December 22 at 3 p.m.
  • Seton Hall will compete at the West Palm Beach Invitational in Florida. The Pirates will play Georgia Tech on Thursday at 12:15 p.m. and UNC Greensboro on Friday at 7 p.m.


Texas A&M Rolls Past Houston for Fifth Win of the Season
HOUSTON- Texas A&M overcame Houston 68-52 on Thursday night. Both teams played for the first time in Houston’s newly built Fertitta Center.

Both teams got off a rocky start in the first minute of the game. Texas A&M found its groove with an  Houston did not score its first points of the game until the 4:19 mark after Jasmyne Harris drained a three pointer to make the score in the game 8-3. A scoring drought also occurred the first three minutes of the second quarter. It lasted until the 7:37 mark, when Texas A&M’s Chennedy Carter scored a layup to make it 16-10 in favor of the Aggies. Turnovers were an issue throughout the first half, as both teams turned over the ball 11 times. By halftime, the Aggies led the Cougars 26-23.

Things started heating up in the second half when Texas A&M went on a 15-0 in three minutes to take a 45-27 lead against Houston in the third quarter. The Cougars than used a 5-0 run with 45 seconds to go to cut the lead to 13 points. The Aggies were able to hang on for the rest of the game, scoring 21 points in the fourth quarter to end the game.

Texas A&M was led by Chennedy Carter, who had 25 points. Three other Aggie starters also scored in double digits: Aaliyah Wilson (18), Ciera Johnson (11) and N’Dea Jones (10). Jones also finished in double figures in the rebounding category (13). Texas A&M improves to 5-2 overall on the season.
Houston drops to 4-6 overall on the season. The Cougars were led by Jasmyne Harris, who scored 17 points. Octavia Barnes came off the bench made 13 points for the team. Harris and Barnes along with Serithia Hawkins, Alyssa Okeone and Tatayana Hill combined for a total of 15 rebounds.

  • Chennedy Carter scored a season-high 25 points. This is the fourth game this season and 28th overall in which the sophomore has scored 20 or more points.
  • Carter, Johnson, Wilson and Jones all scored 10 or more points in the game. It was Carter’s seventh consecutive game, Wilson’s fifth consecutive and Johnson and Jones’ fourth consecutive game this season scoring double digits.
  • Jones finished in double digits in rebounds and recorded a double-double for the fourth time this season.

Houston
  •  Jasmyne Harris’ 17 points were a team-high.
  •  Octavia Barnes had a season-high 13 points.
