Tennessee Remains Undefeated with a Win Over Texas

AUSTIN,, TEXAS- No. 9 Tennessee beat No. 12 Texas 88-82 to move to a perfect 8-0 record on the season. The Lady Vols got off to a slow start in the beginning, as the Longhorns led 23-14. In the second quarter,
Tennessee went on a 9-0 run late in the quarter. During that run, Tennessee drained three three-pointers in a row to stretch the lead 40-31. Two of those three-pointers were made by Meme Jackson, and the other three-point shot was scored by Evina Westbrook. Texas cut the lead to 40-35 in the final 22 seconds with five points from Olamide Aborowa.

In the third quarter, Texas’s Sug Sutton tied the game at 52 with a layup at the 4:56 mark. Tennessee’s Jackson fought back by sinking a layup to give the Lady Vols a 54-52 lead 12 seconds later From there, Tennessee went on a 7-0 run for the next two minutes to extend the lead to 59-52. Texas then used a 5-1 run to cut the lead to 60-57. With 20 seconds to go in the third, Mimi Collins was fouled by Danni Williams, resulting in the Tennessee guard making one out of two free throws to make the score 61-57. Collins was fouled again with five seconds to go by Charli Collier and made another one out of two free throws to extend the lead for the Lady Vols, 62-57.

The final 10 minutes of the game came down to the wire for both teams. By the 7:06 mark, Texas’ Audrey Warren made a layup to cut the deficit to 65-63. Westbrook followed in pursuit with a layup to extend the Lady Vols’ lead to 67-63. She was also fouled by Destiny Littleton in the process and sunk a free throw to complete the three-point play and extend the score to 68-63 in favor of Tennessee. The Longhorns cut the Tennessee lead to one point with 3:19 left after Williams drained a three-pointer. The score was 74-73, but the Lady Vols went on a 14-9 run over the final three minutes to secure the victory.

Tennessee improves to a perfect 8-0 record after the win. Jackson had a total of 33 points in the game. Westbrook had 23 points, and Cheridene Green finished with 10 points.

Texas drops to 7-2 and loses its second straight game to an SEC team after losing to Mississippi State in its previous game. Warren had 21 points, while Williams (14 points), Littleton (13 points) and Sutton (11 points) all finished in double figures.

Michigan State Upsets Oregon

EAST LANSING, Mich.- Unranked Michigan State upset No. 3 Oregon on Sunday at home, 88-82. The Ducks got off a hot start at the beginning of the game as they went on a 9-0 run to open the game. The Spartans made it a
one-point game after Sidney Cooks drained a three-pointer to make it 23-22 with 1:14 to go in the opening quarter. Oregon’s Sabrina Ionescu was fouled with 57 seconds to go by Nia Clouden. She scored two free-throws to give the Ducks a 25-22 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Michigan State went on a roll, scoring 24 points in the second quarter. Nia Hollie scored a layup with three minutes to go to cut the Oregon lead to one-point for the second time in the game, 37-36. The Spartans took their first lead of the game at the 2:44 mark of the second quarter with a steal from Cooks, who assisted Jenna Allen for a three-point shot to make it 39-37. From there, Michigan State went on a 7-2 run to lead Oregon 46-39 at halftime.

Oregon’s Erin Boley sunk a three-pointer to cut Michigan State’s lead to 50-48 with eight minutes in the third quarter. Victoria Gaines scored a layup to stretch the lead to 52-48 for the Spartans. Michigan State went a 10-4 with 7:28 in the quarter to lead Oregon 60-52. The lead was cut back to two after another three-point shot drained by Boley to make the score 62-60. With 1:38 to go, Allen scored a jumper, and Michigan State went on a 7-0 run to lead 69-60 at the end of the third quarter.

Michigan State scored 19 points in the fourth quarter to secure the upset win over one of the top three teams in the nation. The Spartans also improve to 8-1 on the season. Allen had the best night of her career as she finished with 27 points. Michigan State also had three players who finished in double figures. McCutcheon finished with 14 points, Mardrekia Cook with 12 points and Cooks with 10 points.

Oregon loses its first game of the season and drops to 7-1 overall. Ionescu finished the game with 29 points, while Boley finished with 24 points. Ruthy Hebard and Satou Sabally combined for 20 points. Hebard also finished with 11 rebounds. Maite Cazorla had 11 assists.
