On Thursday, senior Lara
Soares was ranked No. 64 in the country in singles by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA).
This is the first time that the Lady Flames have ever had a
player ranked inside the top 70 in women’s singles. She is also the second
player, along with Jordan Jenkins (2008-11), to be listed inside the
top-125.
Soares recently finished 11-4 in fall 2018 tournaments. The
senior from Brazil won a singles title at the Hokie Fall Invite at Virginia
Tech on Sept. 30. She was also a semifinalist at the Dick Vitale Intercollegiate
Clay Court Classic and UNLV Rebel Invite. While competing at the 2018 ITA
Atlantic Regional, Soares reached the round of 16 in the singles main draw.
Soares had a tremendous junior season with the Lady Flames
after transferring from Southwest Baptist (Mo.). She was named to the Big South
All-Conference first team for both singles and doubles. Soares was also named
to the All State first team for doubles by the Virginia Sports Information
Directors (VaSID). The Brazil native finished 20-10 during the 2017-18
campaign, and her winning percentage was the seventh-best singles winning
percentage in Liberty women’s tennis program history (.667).
Soares and the Lady Flames will begin the spring season at
Wake Forest on Jan. 19.
