NCAA Week 2 Results



Vanderbilt at UConn
UNCASVILLE, Conn.- On Saturday, No. 2 UConn met Vanderbilt for a Hall of Fame Showcase game at Mohegan Sun Arena.

UConn took control of the game with a 20-7 start in the first quarter. Vanderbilt cut the lead to 10 points (25-15) in the second quarter, but that was the only time the Commodores were close to making a comeback. UConn went on a 13-0 run to lead 44-21 at the half. In the second half, it all went the Huskies’ way and led to an 80-42 victory. UConn was led by the “Big Three” (Crystal Dangerfield, Napheesa Collier and Katie Lou Samuelson). Dangerfield led the way 19 points while Collier (15) and Samuelson (15) combined for 30 points. Collier also had double digits in rebounds (16). UConn improves to 2-0 on the season after Saturday’s win.

Vanderbilt drops to 1-4 on the season. The Commodores were led by Chelsie Hall who finished the game with 12 points.

UConn will travel to St. Thomas in the Virgin Islands to participate in the Paradise Jam. The Huskies’ first game will be on Thursday against Ole Miss at 7:30 p.m.

Vanderbilt will return home to host Tennessee State on Wednesday at 1 p.m. Eastern (12 p.m. CT).


Maryland at South Carolina

COLUMBIA, S.C.- No. 9 Maryland earned its fifth consecutive win after a dominant performance against No. 10 South Carolina.

The Terrapins were trailing in the first quarter by 12 points but went on a 16-1 run to take a 22-19 lead. Maryland scored over 20 points in each quarter of the first half of the game (1st quarter: 22, 2nd quarter: 23). The Terrapins also outrebounded the Gamecocks 53-29 for the game. Maryland’s pressure caused South Carolina to struggle throughout the entire game. The Gamecocks had a 3-point shooting percentage of 4.8. However, South Carolina was successful in pressuring Maryland in the second half. The Gamecocks’ pressure caused the Terrapins to turn the ball over nine times.  Despite that, Maryland was able to pull out the 85-61 victory to continue the perfect start to its season (4-0). The Terrapins were led by Blair Watson who had 20 points. Five other players also finished the game in double digits. Stephanie Jones had 18 points, Kaila Charles with 17 points, and Channise Lewis, Taylor Mikesell, and Shakira Austin combined for a total of 30 points (each player had 10 points each).

South Carolina drops its first game of the season (2-1). Mikiah Herbert Harrigan led the Gamecocks with 14 points.

South Carolina will travel to Canada to compete in the Vancouver Showcase. First game will be on Thursday at 9 p.m. against ETSU.
