NCAA Women’s Basketball: Week 1


No. 2 UConn will have two games this week to begin the season. On Sunday, the Huskies will open the season at home against Ohio State (1-1). The second game of the week will be at Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Conn. with a matchup versus Vanderbilt.

The game versus Ohio State will be at 12 p.m. on Sunday at Gampel Pavilion.

UConn
  •         The Huskies were chosen as the favorite to win the AAC Conference Championship.
  •      Katie Lou Samuelson was tabbed AAC Preseason Player of the Year and was named to the watch list for the Ann Meyers Drysdale Award.
  •         Both Napheesa Collier and Crystal Dangerfield were named to the first team of the AAC Preseason All-Conference Team.
  •         Collier is candidate for the Katrina McClain Award.
  •         Dangerfield is currently a nominee for the Nancy Lieberman Award.


Ohio State
  •         Ohio State loses five of its star players from last season.
  •         This season, the Buckeyes will look to rebuild from the previous season.
  •         Carmen Grande is on the watchlist for the Nancy Lieberman Award.
  •         Ohio State will be without Ashanti Abshaw this season after she tore her ACL.
  •         The Buckeyes lost to No. 22 South Florida on Tuesday night 47-71.
    • Player of the Game: Carly Santoro (14 pts, 3 rebs, 1 asst)
  •      They will play at home against Detroit Mercy on Friday before traveling to Storrs.

Game History
·        UConn has won all their games against Ohio State. The last time these two teams played each was in 2016 in Hartford, Conn.

  •         Mariella Fasoula was nominated as a candidate for the Lisa Leslie Award.
  •        Vanderbilt will be without Bree Horrocks as she is dealing with blood clots.
  •         The Commodores recently lost their first game of the season to North Alabama (71-74).
    • Player of the Game: Autumn Newby (30 pts, 10 rebs, 1 asst)
  •         Before playing UConn, Vanderbilt will play their next three games against MTSU, Austin Peay, and NC State.

Game History
·        The last time these two teams played each other was in the first round of the 2013 NCAA Tournament. UConn beat Vanderbilt 77-44.





On Sunday, both No. 4 Baylor (2-0) and No. 23 Arizona State (1-0) will meet in Fort Defiance, Ariz.

The game is set to tipoff at 7:30/3:30 CT at Bee Holdzil Fight Scouts Events Center.
